An Garda Siochána may well be all over the news these days but they’re all over the roads of Kerry today.

There is some serious checkpointing going on in the area today and tonight.

High Visibility Campaign

Huge manpower is being brought into play as the high visibility campaign on the roads around Castleisland, Tralee and Killarney makes its presence felt.

It’s your average checkpoint but there are more of them today than for a while. There is another edge to the operation in that the checkpoints are also on high alert for roving criminals targeting Kerry from other parts of the country.

Even so, motorists can expect their vehicles to get more than a cursory examination and it’s no harm to have tax and insurance and test paperwork in order and on display.

43 Killed on Irish Roads

Road Safety campaigners are horrified at the reality that 43 people have lost their lives on Irish roads so far in 2017.

They have been calling for more Garda checkpoints and greater visibility on the roads in a bid to reduce this alarming statistic.

If you’re out and about in your vehicle today make sure you’re sober at least and have all your bits and bobs of paperwork on the window and your license in your pocket.

A Brief Introduction to the Plays Involved:

A Wake in the West  By Michael J.Ginnelly

The spirit of 1970s West of Ireland is set to be resurrected in the first scene from, ‘A Wake In The West’, written by Mayo playwright Michael J Ginnelly. The story takes place in a country house, in a small town, in County Mayo. The plot of this play centres on the wake of Tom Healy, a man from who was known to be ‘fond of the drop’. The play tells the tale of the hapless efforts of Tom’s family and friends to have him laid to rest. The late Tom Healy liked two things in life – a drink and giving his family a hard time. Tom’s controversial last request of wanting to be buried at sea, by his ashes being scattered on the white crested waves, threatens to humiliate his family and make them the laughing stock of the small fishing village in which they live. Not your regular mass-goer, Tom’s wishes have to be discussed with the priest and doctor – all common practice in 1970s Ireland. The real mayhem begins in our scene today though when Rose, an elderly neighbour arrives at the house to pay her respects and her actions set in motion a sequence of hilarious events.

In rehearsals: Mary Healy, Ballymacelligott, (seated) with Moya Sheehan and Brian Moloney, Castleisland and Róisín Scanlon, Currans getting their act together for the joint St. Patrick's Boys' and St. Joseph's Girls' Secondary Schools evening of drama at St. John's Hall on Thursday, April 6th from 7:30pm. ©Photograph: John Reidy

The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley  By Jimmy Keary

The next scene comes from the play ‘The Two Loves of Gabriel Foley’ written by Jimmy Keary from Rathowen in Co. Westmeath. The play is set in Rural Ireland. Gabriel Foley is a middle-aged bachelor farmer, who lives with his elderly mother. He has been unlucky in love many times, much to his mother’s frustration. She thinks she’ll never get rid of him. Then he meets upmarket, Hazel Myers and joins the posh drama group in the nearby town in order to romance her. He is unaware that Chrissie McCabe – a cheerful countrywoman, who comes in to help him and his mother – fancies him. By the time Chrissie makes her feelings known to Gabriel, he has already got Hazel’s attention. He and Chrissie decide to try going out together. He tries to let Hazel down gently, but Hazel is not a woman to give up easily. In our opening scene today we will be introduced to Aggie Foley, Gabriel’s 70 year old Mom and his Aunt Lucy Lacey, a country woman in her early 60’s.

It’s the Real McCoy  By Tommy Marren

The final scene comes from the play, ‘It’s the Real McCoy’ by Tommy Marren. The play is set in the Spring of 1964 in the humble cottage of Madge Molloy, a 68-year old woman who has lived over 40 years of her life wondering why her husband Tom – whom she was married to for just five months – mysteriously disappeared without trace or reason. Madge was expecting her only child at the time of Tom’s disappearance and she has grown to be a bitter and angry woman. Her daughter Maura constantly yearns to know what happened to her father and the arrival of a new curate in the parish, namely Father Michael McCoy, throws some light on the reasons behind Tom’s hasty departure.
This rip-roaring comedy is full of classic Irish ‘one-liners’ that will have you in stitches and the fact that Madge happens to have the two nosiest neighbours in Ireland whom we are going to meet doesn’t help! Nora O’Hora and her daughter Cora have a knack of popping up at the most inopportune moments as Madge tries to keep a lid on what is going on!
To add to the confusion Madge’s daughter Maura has fallen in love with the local postman but Madge doesn’t approve as she does her best to convince Maura that she would be much better off without having a man in her life!

As part of its 30th anniversary celebrations as Castleisland Community College and as long at its present location, the college is looking to Wednesday and the hosting of the second of its three events to mark the occasion.

While the foundation of the college may lie in College Road and in the old 1935 established, Castleisland Technical School, Castleisland Community College came into being officially when Fianna Fail Minister for Sport Frank Fahey officially opened the new building at Townbwee on May 26th 1989.

Though it had been operational since before the summer holidays of 1987 it was indeed the full two years before the official opening. And then, probably, only because it was the week in which the general election of that year was called.

New World Record

Now, on the 30th anniversary of the relocation from College Road, the community college is attempting to set a new world record for holding the Biggest Sports Quiz in one Location.

In their efforts, the student organising group will have the support of the other two post primary schools in town, St. Patrick’s and St. Joseph’s Presentation.

Over 500 Taking Part

For the attempt to be successful there must be over 500 people taking part in the quiz and the process will have to be independently supervised and assessed.

The the record application must be signed off and sent away for scrutiny and then the wait begins.

The number to call for more information is 066 71 41196 – during school hours and days.Contact-banner

Seniors Two Point Loss to Ardfert

Currow Seniors lost out by two points to Ardfert on Sunday in our second game of the county league.

After playing well in the first half and leading by 1-7 to 1-5 at half time with Daniel O’Shea scoring 1-2 and points from John Buckley, 0-3; John Mc Mahon and Seamus Scanlon, Currow really struggled for scores in the second half and found the cross wind taking many attempted efforts off target.

Pa McCarthy registered our only score from play in the second half and Mike McCarthy goaled from the penalty spot to leave the final score 2-10 to 2-8.

Great Win by Minors

Our minors had a great win over Killcummin on Saturday. Jack Scanlon had his shooting boots on notching 4-8 of Currow’s total of 6-10 with Adam Manley and Conor Sheehan also scoring goals as we ran out winners 6-10 to 2-13.

The local branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation is preparing for the annual Good Friday Hospice Walk.

Committee members have made a change to the route this year. It has been decided to go the popular route of heading out the Cordal road towards Tullig and around the Black Road.

Branch Left at Garvey’s

Walkers will head back towards town but branch off left at Garvey’s SuperValu towards Cahernard and then back in Killarney Road returning to the starting point.

The walk is one of the major fundraisers for the society each year.

Members of the Castleisland branch urge you to come out and walk – or run if you prefer – on April 14th.

A click on the image here will take you to the Haven Pharmacy Facebook page.

Cards are Available

Sponsorship cards are available at Jack Shanahan’s Haven Pharmacy and Philip Horan’s Service Station.

If people would prefer not to seek sponsorship they can give a personal donation on the day.

All funds raised in Kerry for Hospice remain in Kerry and so your contribution will go directly towards the cost of the new in- patient unit which is now well underway at Kerry University Hospital.

Walkers from Neighbouring Parishes Invited

The Good Friday Hospice Walk will leave from the its usual starting point at the old library at the top-of-the-town at 11am sharp on April 14th and will take up just one hour of your time.

Walkers and friends of the Kerry Hospice Foundation from here and neighbouring parishes are being invited to walk together for the charity of which so many speak to highly.

The transition year students of Castleisland Community College have been learning recently about the voluntary work of the tidy town’s committee.

Mary Walsh and Sheila Hannon gave a talk to the students about the different aspects of the tidy town competition and how marks are awarded.

Water Explorer Competition

The students have already completed work on the river as part of the water explorer competition. They conducted a field trip to the river where they examined the wildlife and they tested the water to access how clean it was.

“It was a positive result as mayflies were found in the water which implies that the river is clean. The oxygen levels in the water also indicate that the water is clean,” said teacher, Doreen Killington.

A sample of the works of art created by the community college students from drinks cans they collected along the River Maine.

Rubbish in the River

“The one area that was disappointing from the field trip was looking at the rubbish thrown in the river and around the river walk.

“Transition year students then decided to become involved in the national spring clean- up! They armed themselves with rubbish bags and divided up into various groups along the river. It was disappointing to see that the majority of the rubbish was made up of aluminum drinks cans.

Aluminium Scraps

“The students did research on making use of aluminum scraps and decided they were going to make ornaments using the cans they collected from the river.

“In engineering class they created flower ornaments with the cans by cutting them up and bending them into shape. They attached each strip in the centre to a brass pipe which they used as a stem.

“They also used the old cans to make a base so the flowers could stand as an ornament. The flowers turned out very well as the aluminum cans were easy to work with,” said Ms. Killington.

Athletes for a Day

A estimated 350 athletes and athletes for the day and of all abilities and paces took off down Main Street at 11am on Sunday morning . Most of them were back and hosed down before the Angelus bell rang in the nearby Church of Saints Stephen and John.

While the runners were out pounding the roads, the kitchen staff in the club pavilion were busily preparing food for them and their families and supporters.

Many travelled from long distances to support the event and the club philosophy would appear to be that they are well treated while they’re here and fed and looked after before they return home.

Personal Barrier

I didn’t meet her on Sunday morning but I knew of Siobhán McCrohan’s determination to beat her own personal barrier of 30 minutes for the 5K and she did just that.

Knocknagoshel athlete Larry Hickey approaches his running with the same determination with which he has fought his battle with cancer over the last couple of years.

On Sunday morning, that determination saw him crossing the finishing under the 70 minutes he set himself for the 10 miler.

Congratulating him in his own unique way, William Dennehy caught my arm and told me I’d have to take a photograph of Larry and his wife Marie at the finishing line. I asked William and Kate McSweeney to stand in also.

Self Imposed Expectations

And these are only two of the many battles with self imposed expectations and tussles with the clock, the elements and the road.

While the weather played a hugely important role in the success of the day, the volunteers and their attitude and attention to the participants was just as vital a cog in the whole process.

Bernadette and Joan and Chris went out of their way to look after those thrust into their care for the duration.

Stewarding Station

Many people were delighted to meet and see club founder member, Denis Brosnan at his usual stewarding station in spite and maybe because of the family loss of their son and brother, Donnacha in Galway on March 17th last.

All involved, along with facility manager Kate McSweeney, can be well pleased with how they handled the events of the day.

That’s based on the comments I picked up in the aftermath of the race as people relaxed, mixed and were wrapped up in the esotericism which events like this seem to create without effort.

Traditional ‘Round the Town’ Treatment for Basketball Heroines

The age old ritual of basketball teams returning to Castleisland in triumph opened a brand new chapter on Sunday evening.

This time because the St. Mary’s U-14 Girls came home with the All Ireland ‘A’ Club Championship title.

Then, following a well set pattern, cup bearing, medal wearing champions are paraded up and down Main Street – it’s tradition – you see.

Take the Salutes

Perched out of car and jeep doors, horns blaring and with parents and grandparents understandably wide-eyed and probably more excited than their chilled out, super cool heroines.

The victors take the salutes of bemused locals and baffled visitors – some of whom ask, as in the line from Waltzing Matilda, ‘What are they parading for.’

Congratulations to the girls, their parents, their club and their coach. Winning an All-Ireland title is such a wonderful achievement and, as a bonding and confidence building experience, it doesn’t get any better. May it stand them in good stead as they progress in their lives and careers.

Proud club PRO, Liz Galwey sent the following report.

All Ireland Victory for St. Mary’s

St. Mary’s Basketball Club added yet another national title to its tally at the weekend when the U-14 girls won the ‘A’ All Ireland Club Championship title on Sunday at Brunell. Basketball Club in Cork.

The girls have gone unbeaten for 19 consecutive games and the run includes wins in the county league and cup as well as the St. Mary’s Blitz and now the All Ireland championship.

Things looked bleak at the start of the weekend as team member, Aoife Walsh had her appendix removed on Friday and Aoife Kerins picked up an ankle injury in the qualifying games on Saturday.

Met the Host Club

However, the girls had wins over Meteors of Dublin and Titans of Galway to secure a place in Sunday’s semi-final.

The game was a cracker and went down to the wire as St. Mary’s met the host club, Brunell.

After after a hard fought battle they took the game by a single point. They went on to have a comprehensive win over St. Colm’s of Limerick in the final winning 38 points to 25.

Reputable Coach, Tommy Dom

The team is coached by a man who is no stranger to All-Ireland titles, Tommy Dom O’Connor. Tommy Dom has proven himself as a reputable coach several times over the years.

He has taken the club and town to All-Ireland victories several times over the years. In 2004 he coached the senior ladies to the All-Ireland club victory. Then he coached the winning national league ladies team of 2012, in addition to this he had coached several winning community games teams down the years.

Second Juvenile Victory

This was the club’s second juvenile victory in this competition. The U-14 girls were winners in 2015 when coached by Denny Porter and George O’Connor.

St. Mary’s has also had wins at ‘B’ level with Maurice Casey, Paudie Fleming, Joanne Downey, Joanne Walmsley and Tommy Dom as coaches.

Team members of this year’s winning squad are: Olga O’Sullivan, Leah Boyle, Paris McCarthy, Aoife Kerins, Jane Lawlor, Emma Kerin, Abbie Mahony, Aoife Walsh, Hanna Herlihy, Grainne Walsh, captain; Rachel O’Sullivan, Katie O’Connor and Shauna Tangney.

It’s an enduringly sad and sorrowful story of the betrayal of a good man. It’s one that darkened the whole of Holy Week ever since the first, or certainly most celebrated, crucifixion over 2,000 years ago.

Its dramatic story line and turns and twists in the telling is what grips us and draws us back to it.

This Good Friday, tomorrow evening at 8pm a troupe of almost 40 actors in costume will be backed by narrators and the Castleisland Parish Choir of equal numbers as The Passion and Death of Christ will be staged around the altar area.

Sounds of Choral Rehearsals

The Church of Saints Stephen and John has been reverberating to the sounds of choral rehearsals as the robe clad actors sweep and gesture as if puppets to the narrations of Frances Moynihan, Jack Shanahan and Mark O’Donoghue.

This is the third year of the Good Friday Dramatisation of the Passion and Death of Christ in Castleisland; the first being staged here by the Tralee based St. John’s Parish Actors and Choir in 2015.

Fr. Dan Cast His Net

This year Fr. Dan O’Riordan cast his net within the parish to find home grown talent to take on the responsibility.

Jerome Stack stepped into the breach as director and with his came many of the Island Players group.

Actors from all over this and neighbouring parishes have rowed in and the rehearsals are going well – according to Jerome.

In fact he uttered the immortal theatrical line: “it will be all right on the night.”

Holy Week and Easter Ceremonies

The days of Easter are the most important in the Church year.

Church ceremonies in Castleisland will include the remembering of Jesus’ Last Supper with his friends and the first Eucharist.

On Holy Thursday, April 13th Castleisland Parish Church at 7pm there will be Mass of the Lord’s Supper in a commemoration of the Last Supper at which Jesus celebrated the first mass.

Blessing Eucharistic Ministers

The ceremony will include a blessing of Eucharistic ministers. There will be confessions after the mass

On Good Friday night at 8pm Jesus’ suffering and death will be dramatised in a solemn celebration of the passion. Communion will be distributed during the ceremony.

Stations of the Cross by candlelight from 9:30pm to 12 midnight in Castleisland Parish Church.

The Resurrection of Jesus

On Saturday night and Sunday morning there will be a celebration of the resurrection of Jesus.

On Good Friday, April 14th there will be a commemorations of the time that Jesus died for us. These will be held at Cordal Church and Scartaglin Church at 3pm. Stations of the Cross in Cordal Church and Scartaglin Church with confessions afterwards.

Easter Sunday April 16th. : Masses at the usual times: 9:30am in Cordal; 10:30am in Scartaglin and at 11:30am in Castleisland.

A reminder that the Castleisland branch of the Kerry Hospice Foundation is appealing to the people of the locality to come out at 11am this morning in support of the foundation, its work and building programme.

The organisers have changed the route for the near 20 year old, annual event and they estimate that this Good Friday Morning Hospice Walk will take less than an hour to complete.

An Hour to Spare

If you have an hour to spare later this morning grab the coat and head for the old library for the walk – which will start there at the usual time of 11am.

Only this year it won’t be heading off up the hill towards Cragg – but around the much flatter, less taxing Black Road route.

Fun runners and walkers from this and neighbouring parishes are being invited to take part and help raise funds for the foundation and its services.

Make a Donation

While sponsorship cards were available for the walk, participants can also simply make a donation to any of the collectors at the start this morning and head off on the walk.

The new route will bring the walkers down past the community centre.

It will then veer left at Garvey’s SuperValu and on for Killarney Road and on up through the town to the finish.

The walk is one of the major fundraisers for the society each year.

New in-Patient Unit

Members of the Castleisland branch urge you to come out and walk – or run if you prefer and it will all take just under and hour of your time.

All funds raised in Kerry for Hospice remain in Kerry and so your contribution will go directly towards the cost of the new in-patient unit which is now well underway at Kerry University Hospital.
