“On the Tidy Towns front, things are progressing well with the residents’ groups doing outstanding work on the roads and estates of the town,” said Castleisland Tidy Towns group spokesperson, Mary Walsh in an optimistic opening line.

“One big problem facing us this year is that of weeds. Spraying has been outlawed in order to preserve wildlife, especially the bees, and for the safety of the general public.

Health and Safety Regulators

“One needs to almost have a Phd now to be able to spray such are the conditions laid down by Health and Safety regulators.

“While the residents’ groups are keeping on top of the problem as best they can, the centre of the town is totally bereft of volunteers to tackle the weeds.

An Hour on Tuesday Nights

“To this end we are going to start going out as a general group again on Tuesday nights for an hour from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

We will meet at The Fountain. We would love to see some new young faces along with the usual volunteers.

“As the Irish seanfhocail says ‘Ní neart go cur le Chéile’ – many hands make light work. We hope the fine weather continues long enough for us to make a start this Tuesday night,” said Mary.

These are heady days for Fine Gael. By the admission of its own members and ministers, the party has enjoyed a remarkable ride as the media followed its leadership debate and eventual outcome over the last couple of months.

Brand new Taoiseach Leo Varadkar’s junior ministerial announcements today have been overshadowed by the Máire Whelan controversy.

Brendan Griffin Appointed

However, South Kerry and the county as a whole will know that Keel native, Brendan Griffin, TD has been appointed as Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport with special responsibility for tourism and sport.

It is probably the post most suitable to a Kerry TD to hold as he will have no little experience in a county with an abundance of opportunities to impress on all fronts.

Former County Councillor

A former member of Kerry County Council, Brendan Griffin was first elected to Dáil Éireann in the election which destroyed Fianna Fáil in 2011.

In the February 2016 election it was expected he would struggle to hold his seat in the all-Kerry constituency.

In fact he increased his vote to a total of 9,674 and came in soon after the land-sliding Healy Rae brothers, Michael and Danny and while losing his party colleague and former mentor, Jimmy Deenihan along the way.

Cllr. O’Connell Travelled

Minister Griffin’s party colleague, Cllr. Bobby O’Connell is in Dublin today for the ‘coronation’ of his friend from back the Maine.

“I’m delighted for him and for Kerry because tourism is a big thing for Kerry and he initiated the nine and a half percent VAT rate a few years ago.

“I’ll be talking to him about the Castleisland Soccer Club’s plans with the community college to develop the pitch as they didn’t get a bob from any source yet.

“He will of course be pushing for the 2023 World Rugby Cup and putting Killarney’s and Kerry’s case in for serious consideration.

But, we must remember he’s a junior minister for the whole country and they’ll be all wanting whatever they can get from him – but we’ll be keeping him posted said a delighted Cllr.

O’Connell.

Two images from Sunday’s Denny Premier B League Final at Mounthawk Park will stay with me.

One is of goalscorer, Steven McCarthy being hugged at full time by his childhood and lifelong friend and team attendant, Gary O’Sullivan.

The other is of Steven, with the league cup in hand in the car-park, taking a selfie.

The teams were still only getting the feel of the occasion when Steven struck after little more than nine minutes in. His goal gave the Island boys the cushion – nerve-wracking it may be but a cushion nonetheless.

An Own Goal

The nerves were soothed with only minutes to go in the game when an error in the Mastergeeha defence caused an own goal. Steven’s dreams were realised.

Dreams fade but memories linger and selfies have their place on a day like this – Steven’s Day.

Injured Captain Shane

Manager Dan Maunsell confirmed that his team captain, Shane O’Loughlin is out of hospital but he sustained a broken collarbone and a damaged eye socket early in Sunday’s game. We wish him well in his recovery.

Here, soccer writer, Mike Rice reports on the game.

Another Title in the Bag for Castleisland.  Denny Premier B League Final Castleisland B 2 – Mastergeeha 0

Castleisland teams make a habit of winning titles and their B team added another piece of silverware to their already overladen mantle-piece.

At Mounthawk Park on Sunday they were crowned Premier B Champions after a hard earned win over Mastergeeha.

The game was played in sweltering heat but both sides rose to the challenge and provided an entertaining game that was delicately balanced right up to the final whistle.

Referee Seamus O’Mahony did the sensible thing and allowed the players a water break midway through both halves.

Plenty of the Ball

Mastergeeha will be disappointed they did not score in this game as they had plenty of the ball but they were badly lacking in finishing power up front.

Great credit is due to Castleisland who had a game plan in place and stuck to it right to the very end.

Castleisland carried the biggest threat in the first half as they edged exchanges at midfield and Jonathan Downey and Steven Mc Carthy were a constant threat up front.

They took their chances when they got them and defended resolutely throughout the game while their goalie Martin Hewitt made a couple of fine saves at vital stages of the game.

Castleisland started strongly and forced a few early corners which yielded nothing.

Superbly Engineered Goal.

However they went ahead in the 10th minute with a superbly engineered goal.

A long ball out of defence was not dealt with by the Mastergeeha defenders who allowed the ball to bounce in the goalmouth and, as it bobbled about a bit, Steven McCarthy won possession rounded the last defender and drilled the ball low to the bottom corner.

They struck again shortly afterwards after a corner and a Danny Feehan effort was taken off the line.

An accidental clash of heads between Colm Lenihan and Shane O’Loughlin led to a hold up as both players were attended to and Shane O Loughlin had to retire and was replaced by Eamon Mc Loughlin while Colm Lenihan returned to play after getting some treatment.

Good Chance to Equalise

Mastergeeha had a good chance to equalise shortly afterwards but Noel Moynihan was denied by a fine save by the Castleisland keeper, Martin Hewitt.

Another counter attack created a chance for Mastergeeha when Noel Moynihan put in Padraig Doyle and with the Castleisland keeper off his line he tried to chip him and his effort was only fractionally too high.

Coming up to half time Mastergeeha had two more chances but Thomas Templeman was denied by a fine save by the Castleisland goalie while Chris Egan put a free kick over the top.

Dominated Play

Mastergeeha dominated play in the second half as Castleisland sat back and defended their lead.

They had to rely on shots from distance to try and get a score and that became frustrating as the game progressed

As the half wore on Castleisland used their subs bench to good effect and slowed down the pace of the game.

When any bit of danger existed at the back Castleisland cleared their lines immediately and were not too particular where the ball went once it was out of play.

Mastergeeha tried their utmost to etch out an equaliser at the conclusion of the game but they just could not penetrate a rock solid Castleisland defence where Mike Cahill, Ger Byrne and Daniel Downey were in sparkling form while while Barry Lynch turned in an outstanding performance in front of the back four.

Out the Window

Any chance Mastergeeha had of getting an equaliser went out the window as disaster struck in the third minute of added time when they conceded a bizarre own goal.

Aidan Kerins was put under pressure at the back by sub, Pa O’Rourke and he passed the ball back to his goalkeeper but it was overhit and the advancing keeper tried to head it out but the ball went over his head and into the back of the net to seal the game for the Islanders.

It was a great all round display by Castleisland who were tight at the back creative at midfield and dangerous up front.

Although Castleisland are champions and promoted they can’t go up to Premier A next season as their A team are there already and a club can’t have two teams in the same division.

Teams: Castleisland B: Martin Hewitt, Evan O’Brien, (Stephen Divane 65 mins); Daniel Downey, Ger Byrne, Mike Cahill, Barry Lynch, Martin Mazza Moriarty, Shane O’Loughlin, (Eamon Mc Loughlin 20 mins); Danny Feehan, (Sean O’Connell 88 mins); Steven McCarthy, Jonathan Downey (Pa O’Rourke 88 mins).

Mastergeeha, Mike Gustaf, Paudie O’Connor, Aidan Kerins, Danny Wren, Jerh Sheehan, Colm Lenihan, Chris Egan, Padraig Doyle, Noel Moynihan, Paul Moroney, (James Nagle 70 mins); Tom Templeman. Referee, Seamus O’Mahony.

Manager Delighted

Manager of the Castleisland side, Dan Maunsell speaking after the game said he was delighted to win the title.

“The lads worked hard all season and it is great now to have something to show for it.  Before the game we set a target to try and get an early goal and we got that and made sure we would hold on to it and we done that.”

“We defend Italian style and are very hard to break down. We were contented going in 1-0 ahead at half time but we knew Mastergeeha would come at us in the second half and we knew we had to be razor sharp to keep them at bay.”

“We were very tight at the back and restricted them to long range efforts on goal. The second goal was a bit out of the ordinary but they all count at the end and it clinched the game for us,” he said.

I’m sure Tom Mc Carthy’s Bar was swinging on Sunday night. Enjoy the celebrations lads.

Deputy Ferris Congratulates Minister Griffin and Raises Plight of Listowel Boy

Sinn Féin TD for Kerry Martin Ferris has welcomed the appointment of fellow Kerry TD Brendan Griffin as a junior minister.
“I would like to congratulate my colleague Brendan Griffin, on his promotion, it is a proud day for himself and his family,” said Deputy Ferris.

“It is welcome news for Kerry as we seem to have been forgotten down here by this government. There are enormous problems still facing the county and hopefully with Deputy Griffin’s elevation some of these will now be tackled.

“The infrastructure, and particularly the roads in the county,  are not fit for purpose and need major investment.

“There is still a huge demand for quality jobs in the county and I would hope that projects like Shannon LNG can finally be brought to fruition. I look forward to working with Brendan to progress these and other important issues for the benefit of the entire county.”

“Listowel Boy Must Have Surgery”  Deputy Ferris
Martin Ferris TD  has critiscised the Minister for Health and the HSE over the delay a young Kerry boy is experiencing in waiting for an urgent operation at Crumlin Children’s Hospital.
“The family of a 10 year old Listowel boy who had his surgery postponed last November have contacted me over the ongoing delays their son is experiencing in getting this very necessary operation,” said Deputy Ferris.

“Despite a previous postponement and being put on the urgent list in Crumlin in May, the family is still no wiser as to when the operation will take place. I have contacted the office of the Minister for Health on a number of occasions to highlight the plight of this young boy and his family.

“It is not acceptable that this unfortunate child has to suffer due to the lack of resources facing the HSE and the Minister for Health needs to be held accountable.

“This boy has just been released from University Hospital Kerry after spending nearly a week there again due to complications arising from a previous surgery. Our hospitals are being clogged up because of cases like this which unfortunately are not a priority for this government,” Deputy Ferris concluded.

Date Published: Wednesday 21st June 2017. Date of Death: Wednesday 21st June 2017.

Born Before the Rising

The late Mrs. Curtin celebrated her100th birthday at home in Knightsmountain in February 2016.

On the occasion she was surrounded by her family and a huge circle of friends from the locality and from her native Co. Mayo.

The event prompted two very special deliveries. One from Áras an Uachtaráin and the other from The Vatican, from President Michael D Higgins and Pope Francis respectively.

Born in Co. Mayo

She was born, Nora Mulchrone on February 18th 1916 and was raised in Buchagh, Newport, Co Mayo with her six siblings: Tommy, John, Charlie, Molly, Catherine and Rose and her parents Edward Mulchrone and Rose Moran.

Her parents had a farm and her father was a weaver. The family were known as the Weaver Mulchrones.

She went to school in Trienbeg NS and left Mayo in 1938. Her father would send her tweed twice a year for her to get a suit made in the latest fashion as Nora was so tall she could not get suits to fit her. He would always make sure it was a different pattern or colour.

Married a Kerryman in Kilburn

She met Charlie Curtin and married him in the Church of the Sacred Heart on Quex Road in Kilburn, London on August 8th. 1941 and they returned to Mayo in 1942 . Their first child Rose was born the same year.

They settled in Kerry in 1943 and they made Knightsmountain their home. They went on to have six more children. Mary, Joan, Noreen, Charlie, Kathleen and Eamon.

Nora kept a cow which was milked daily and had a well for fresh water. Charlie worked for the forestry locally and enjoyed nothing more than going to Castleisland on his Honda 50.

Regular Visitors Home

Kathleen and Eamon are still living in Kerry and looked after Nora daily with the help of her fantastic carers, Bridie Begley and Lil Burke.

Mary, Joan, Noreen, Charlie all live in parts of England and are regular visitors home. Nora has 16 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Another special family event took place on the great day when one of her great-grand-children, Ruby Haigh was christened in Knocknagoshel Chuch by Fr. Eoin Mangan earlier that day.

Nora, with the help of her grandchildren Rosie and Carole, had a Facebook account.

Writing and Receiving Letters
She had many friends and loved nothing more than to scroll through the pictures and news from all her extended family who are scattered from New York to Australia.

While she liked the pictures on Facebook she loved nothing more than writing or receiving a letter which had been a hobby of hers all her life.

She attributed her longevity to starting her day with a cup of cooled, boiled water.

Her birthday was marked with a celebration in her home with all of her children and family and a special cake, made by her niece Rosaleen Moore, which came all the way from Mayo.

May God be Good to her.

Currow Senior GAA Club News

Our seniors lost out to Kenmare on Sunday on a scoreline of 2-13 to 1-10 in Division 2 of the county league.

Currow got off to a good start and led 1-4 to no score after 12 minutes. They opened with a goal and a point from Timmy O’Leary and three points from Daniel O Shea.

However, we were unable to keep up that scoring rate and by half time, Kenmare had reeled in Currow to lead 1-7 to 1-6.

Kenmare was the better team in the second half and deserved the victory.

Rejuvenation Job a Triumph at An Ríocht AC

If you were to script a race against the elements and time itself, where better to stage it than on an athletics track with a hugely important event waiting in the wings.

That very scenario played itself out right here in Castleisland all during the week and will draw its final breath only later tonight.

Fractious weather conditions all week weren’t in the least conducive to the laying of the synthetic materials that went into the two-tone rejuvenation of the near 30 year old track.

Denny Community Games Finals

And, as this weekend loomed with the Denny Kerry Community Games Finals booked in for Saturday and Sunday, there were very few hours on the clock which didn’t see action on the preparation of the vital facility.

This evening it looks home and dry with the promise of a few more hours of good, dry weather as the skips were being filled with the waste of the €140,000 refurbishment job and the grounds being prepared.

Project committee manager, Ger Cremin and An Ríocht AC manager, Kate McSweeney are as pleased as the many locals who have come to the facility over the past week to wonder at the transformation of the track.

Opening Ceremony on Saturday at 10am

The opening ceremony and lighting of the flame of the 2017 Kerry Community Games Track and Field Athletics Finals will be performed at 10am on Saturday morning at An Ríocht Athletic Club grounds in Castleisland.

The launch of the 2017 games on May 26th was the last official engagement on the old, red, tartan track.

The new two-tone track, only the third in Europe – the other two are in Finland and PortAventura, will host the games at the weekend as the first official event on the refurbished surface.

I stood between men from China and America on Wednesday evening as the final touches were being put to the track. I expressed my admiration for the work and for the uplifted appearance of the place.

As Good as it Gets

The American, who flew in from Florida to have a look at the work, responded: “This is as good as it gets – This is amazing – believe me.” I do – I said.

I looked at the Chinese man and he just smiled and warned me that the white paint on the lines was still wet.

I told him I hadn’t taken up running yet. He looked and me and laughed politely.

The children and young athletes coming to Castleisland on Saturday morning are in for a real treat and the local children are having to be restrained from using the track. Mainly because its very final touches are being applied and also because of a sense of fairness to those from the rest of the county.

Action on Saturday and Sunday

The event, sponsored again this year by Denny, will open An Ríocht on this Saturday morning at 10am and continue all day with a 10am start also on Sunday up to medal presentations on that evening.

The games will attract a host of competitors representing all communities from across the county.

“The Kerry Community Games is a child-centred event with a focus on participation. It gives children an opportunity to enjoy the benefits of sport and the chance to progress and compete in the National Community Games Finals in Dublin in August.

“We are looking forward to a fun weekend with lots of great events,” said Kerry Community Games County Secretary, Margaret Culloty.

Denny Involvement

‘Puppy’ – the thunderstruck eight-year-old has been reunited with his owners through the kindness of Deirdre Cronin with the help of The Maine Valley Post.

He was lucky in his choice of lodgings when he ran from home during the thunderstorm of Tuesday night / Wednesday morning.

The kind hearted, Deirdre Cronin took him in and immediately, fed and photographed him and alerted The Maine Valley Post to his plight.

Puppy – Is Gone Home

Deirdre sent a message this morning that ‘Puppy’ – her eight-year-old canine lodger is gone home to Currow with his delighted owners.

He lodged for the few days in Dromulton but his home is in Rosaneen in Currow a distance estimated by Deirdre to be the best part of 10 miles away.

Thunder Warning

It’s another warning to pet owners, and owners of dogs in particular, that thunder really frightens them and they are well capable of running away and getting disorientated and lost.

Delighted to report the good news this morning and all thanks to Deirdre for her kindness to Puppy in his time of need.

All’s well that ends well Deirdre can now take a well deserved Bow – Wow !

Great Evening Had By All at U-6 Friendly

On Friday, June 16th and in front of a large crowd on a lovely’s Summer evening we saw our near neighbours Cordal play Desmond’s in a friendly U-6 match.

There was great excitement as, for some of these boys and girls, it was their very first game of football and a great night was had by all.

Castleisland Desmonds V John Mitchels County League Division 1

Castleisland Desmonds seniors suffered their fifth defeat in a row when they played John Mitchel’s here at home on Saturday evening, June 17th. They stay rooted to the bottom of the Division 1 table of the County League.

The game was played in front of a large crowd on a lovely summer’s evening – but John Mitchels went away with the spoils.

Desmonds, like the previous week’s game against Dr.Crokes, played very well in the first half and went in at half time down only two points. With the scoreboard reading 0-8 to 0-6 at the time.

Desmonds scores coming from Cian O’Connor 0-4 and one each from Brian Leonard and Kieran Brennan.

But the Mitchel’s scores came from the very impressieve James Duggan playing at corner forward scoring 0-4 – with two of these from frees.

There were also points from Sean Moloney, Jack Myers and two from the boot of Alan O’Donoghue.

This game was going to be hard for the home side if they were to get their first win in this year’s county league.

The second half started with a bang with the men from Tralee scoring a goal in the second minute by Alan O’Donoghue and this was followed by two very good points from play by Mitchels midfielder, Shane O’Connor in the sixth and seventh minutes and the game looked over for the men in the white and blue jerseys.

Desmonds didn’t score till the 10th minute of the half with a free from Cian O’Connor and we saw three more scores from Mitchel’s Alan O’Donoghue, Sean Moloney and Shane O’Connor and it was now 0-7 to 1-13 to Mitchels.

In the 23rd Desmonds player Tadhg O’Connell suffered a bad shoulder injury to add to Desmond’s troubles and with the home defence split open we saw Mitchel’s score three more scores from Stephen O’Mahony, Alan O’Donoghue and, from Man of the Match, James Duggan and they finished on 1-16 to Desmonds 0-09

This Saturday evening, June 24th Desmonds senior team is at home to Rathmore in a rearranged fixture. Throw in at 7:30pm.

Kerry County Board chairman and Brosna native, Tim Murphy will unveil a memorial, marble plaque at Cordal GAA Club grounds on this Saturday evening June 24th at 7:45pm.

The unveiling of the plaque will dedicate the stand there as The Tom Wrenn Memorial Stand forever more

The ceremony will take place after the Cordal v Knocknagoshel county league game which is due to start at 6pm.

Refereeing Duties

The plaque, of black Indian granite and the work of O’Connor Memorials, Castleisland, features a photograph of the late Mr. Wrenn taken by club photographer, Nora Fealey in 2014 after Tom announced his retirement from countywide refereeing duties.

The late Tom Wrenn died in March 2016 and his loss to family, friends and club and community is still felt – and evidently remembered.

If you ever needed to epotomise or personify the oft used phrase A Community Man – then, Tom Wrenn fitted every imaginable category of that broad sweep.

Every baptised child, every holy communion, confirmation, wedding – Tom was there as parish clerk at all the important points in the circle of life of so many people.

Honouring and Remembering

With this evening’s unveiling, Cordal GAA Club members are honouring and remembering their chairman, inspirational leader, referee, worker and East Kerry Board servant. Tom was also honoured by the East Kerry Board shortly before his untimely death.

His really proud moment came in the midst of his own community, on his own GAA field in Cordal. This was on the occasion in June 2015 of the visit of Uachtaráin Cumann Lúthchleas Gael, Aogán Ó Fearghail to re-open the pitch after an exhausting and intensive fundraising campaign and a programme of drainage and resurfacing work.

Career as a Mechanic

Long and loyal service was a hallmark of Tom Wrenn’s life and that extended to his career as a mechanic.

As boy and man he worked with Ahern’s Garage for over 45 years. Ahern’s director, Pat Ahern paid tribute to Tom on hearing the news of his death.

“Tom was one of the main men in the Ahern’s set up. He has been here a lot longer that most of us and he’s known throughout the county and beyond by people who have had vehicles tested here over the years. He’s a huge loss to us and another link with the origins of the firm lost, God rest him,” said Mr. Ahern.

It is appropriate then that Ahern’s are associated with the memorial plaque being unveiled this evening.

There was a lot more written about the late Tom Wrenn at the time of his death and, no doubt, stories of the boundless dedication and energy he put into his local GAA club will be remembered with the opening of The Tom Wrenn Memorial Stand in Cordal this evening.

Two League Wins for Cordal Seniors

Cordal seniors added valuable points to their league tally after two more victories.

The team is top of the Division 5 league and have won every game this year so far.

In the most recent game Cordal came up against Ballyduff in a mighty clash that saw Cordal having to fight hard against their Ballyduff adversary.

They beat them by just a point with 1-9 to Ballyduff’s 0-11.

Last Sunday under blissful conditions Cordal were up against Ballylongford who had a clean sheet with six SFL wins and were alongside Cordal at the top of the league table.

The game began with a fitting moments silence in tribute to the late Jimmy Roche.

The Cordal team showed great determination and will power in this match. Philip Griffin set Cordal up for a riveting game of football with a goal seconds into the game.

The two Philips added a further four points before Philip O’Connor scored a goal in the tenth minute.

T.J O’Connor was next for Cordal scoring a point. Brian Reidy took every opportunity and achieved two more goals for Cordal in the 14th and 17th minutes.

This stretched Cordal’s lead further. T.J O’Connor and Sean Walsh added two more points to Cordal’s tally before Brian Reidy finished the half up for Cordal with two final points. Ballylongford found it difficult to break Cordal’s offensive march and only successfully broke Cordal’s defences enough times to add three points to their tally while suffering numerous wides. Two of the points were scored by Ciaran O’Connor and the third by Padraig O’Neil. Half time put Cordal eighteen points up at 4-09 to 0-03.

The second half was more balanced with Ballylongford adding 1-6 and Cordal adding 1-9. The final score left Cordal the undisputed winners with 5-18 to Ballylongford’s 1-9.

Cordal/Scart Minors v Killarney Legion

Cordal/Scart kicked off their East Kerry Region League against Killarney Legion last Thursday in a thirteen-aside match.

Both teams hadn’t been in action since the exams but the game was fairly even with a close finish.

Cordal/Scart managed to hold a point over their opponents and were declared the winners with 3-11 to Legion’s 1-16.

Legion had the stronger start kicking four points before Adam Fallon put Cordal/Scart on the scoreboard with a point. Donnacha Daly and David Riordan added two more points before Donnacha Daly added a goal in the 10th minute putting Cordal/Scart in the lead.

Legion were quick to respond with their own goal two minutes later.

Legion added a couple of more points stretching their lead before Kieran Enright put Cordal/Scart back into the game with a goal in the 24th minute. Half time left Legion up by two points with 1-9 to Cordal/Scart’s 2-4.

The second half was just as intense with both teams fighting hard for control of the ball. Cordal equalised with points scored by Adam Fallon and Sean Walsh.

The remainder of the half saw Cordal/Scart doing their best to keep both teams level until Kieran Enright in the 15th minute scored a goal putting the boys in the lead.

Cordal/Scart goalie Cathal O’Donoghue had to work hard keeping Legion out of goals but he did his job well.

In the final minute Legion were awarded a 45 and debate ensued if he should go for goal or a point. The Legion lad took his point and the referee blew the whistle giving Cordal/Scart the deserved win with 3-11 to Legion’s 1-16. Well done boys!

Cordal/Scart Team: 1. Cathal O’Donoghue; 2. Pádraig Brosnan; 3. Denis Mahony; 4. Mark O’Donoghue; 5. Josh Kerin; 6. Joseph Sheehy; 7. Kieran Enright, 2-1; 8. Dylan O’Donoghue; 9. Donnacha Daly, 1-1; 10. Adam Fallon, 0-2; 11. Sean Walsh, 0-5; 12. Pádraig O’Connor, 0-1; 13. David Riordan, 0-1.

In spite of losing a huge chunk of his usual support to a similar vintage vehicle event in Kilflynn on Sunday, June 18th. Noel O’Connor is confident that the ‘take’ from the day will exceed the €3,000 mark.

“We didn’t realise at the time we organised the Castleisland Vintage Run that we’d be clashing with Kilflynn – but we still got great support at the start in Ballymac on the day.

“We’re going to talk to the organisers in Kilflynn and we’ll look then at moving our event to an earlier slot in the year,” said Noel.

Noel has been fundraising for cancer related charities since he got his feet back on the ground after he underwent a life-saving operation in Cork in 1999.

“I’m glad to say we’re heading for the three thousand (€3,000) mark in our fundraising for the Kerry/Cork Health Link Bus and I’m very thankful to all the vintage vehicle owners who turned up to support us on the day.

Cheque Presentation

“We’ll be having a cheque presentation session at The Halfway Bar some evening soon and all will be invited back,” said Noel.

The fact that last year’s event raised €4,661 is the main reason for the rethink on a reschedule of the date.

The Cash for Ash prize-winner of a trailer of dried, ash firewood was Christina Stack from Lixnaw and she had her prize delivered to her door on Monday evening by Noel O’Connor’s son, Frank.

On Friday the Currow U-14 team and their supporters left the village at 9am bidding to retain their John West Féile Peile na nÓg title in Co. Monaghan.

By Con Enright PRO

That evening in Ballybay we played two game against Lámh Dhearg of Antrim and Ballybay Pearse’s Brothers of Monaghan.

Antrim Opposition

The first game was against the Antrim opposition where our boys got off to a winning start beating Lámh Dhearg on a score line of 3-12 to 0-1.

Our second game was against the home side Ballybay. In this game Currow proved too strong for their Monaghan counterparts and won on a final score of Currow 4-14 to Ballybays 0-1.

After the game we continued our journey to Derrynoose, Co. Armagh to our host club, where we were given a fabulous reception by their players and supporters.

Good Sporting Contest

On Saturday morning we played the host club at 11:30am. In a good sporting contest Currow had the upper hand on the opposition and went on to win on a score of Currow 1-8 to Derrynoose’s 1-4. After the game Armagh manager Kieran McGeeney gave a lovely speech to both sets of players and supporters in which he gave us good advice on how to continue improving on our football skills.

Having won our three games and  topping the group it was onto Ballybay yet again for the quarter final where Currow’s opponents were to be Grangenovlin of Kildare.

Currow U-14 Féile Winners 3

Currow captain David Moriarty receiving the John West Féile Peile na nÓg Cup after a string of hard earned wins.

At half time Grangenovlin were ahead on a score of 2-3 to Currow’s 0-4 but in the second half Currow came back into the game with points from Justin McCarthy, Jack and David Moriarty.

John O’Connor’s Pivotal Goal

The decisive moment of the game came in the eighth minute when Currow’s John O’Connor scored the pivotal goal to put us into the semi finals.

The game ended with Currow victorious on a score of Currow 1-9 to Grangenovlin’s 2-4.

When we arrived back to Derrynoose a great evening of entertainment was provided for us, a barbeque, a trip to the local bowling alley for the Derrynoose and Currow players and music for all. Also on the night, Currow and Derrynoose players made some presentations to one another.

Currow secretary, Sean O’Connor thanked Derrynoose for their warm welcome and for their hospitality.

On Sunday morning we said our goodbyes to our host club Derrynoose Blues and headed for Inniskeen, Co. Monaghan for the semi final against Seán Mac Cumhaill of Donegal.

Three Vital Goals

Our team proved to have the upper hand on the opponents and we scored three vital goals during the game which came from Jack Moriarty and and two from David Moriarty. We went on to win the contest on a score line of Currow 3-8 Seán mac Cumhaill 1-1.

Next up was the final. This took place in the same venue, where the opposition would be Clann Na Banna of Down.

Currow lead at half time on a score of 1-7 to 0-1 – with the goal coming from full forward, Justin McCarthy.

In the second half, Currow kept tipping over their scores and, in the seventh minute, centre forward David Moriarty put the game beyond doubt with Currow’s second goal.

The final whistle blew and Currow were yet again Feile champions emerging victorious on a score of Currow 2-10 to Clann Na Banna of Down 0-5.

Time to Head Home

The John West Féile Peile na nÓg Cup was presented to Currow captain, David Moriarty and then it was time to head home.

We arrived in Currow at 10pm to a huge bonfire, flags and posters and we were given a rapturous welcome home by many Currow supporters and the team members were presented with their medals.

A massive congratulations to the Currow team and their mentors Tone Brosnan, Tim Healy and Con Enright who worked hard preparing the them for the competition.

A big thank you to Paudie Collins of Collins Bus Hire for organising and driving the bus to the Feile.

Also thanks to Jennifer Ahern for arranging the gear for our players and mentors and Maureen Kenny for organising the hotel for the Currow supporters.

Unveiling of the Tom Wrenn Memorial Stand

Saturday, June 24th was a poignant evening for the club as the community and its friends gathered together in Cordal’s blue and gold abode to pay a lasting tribute in the memory of Tom Wrenn, former Cordal GAA Club chairman, church sacristan and an upstanding member of the community.

The evening was to be marked by the naming of the club’s stand in his honour.

Co-ordinated by Charlie Farrelly

The unveiling ceremony was co-ordinated by Charlie Farrelly and there was numerous speakers as Charlie kept things light hearted and kept the audience entertained.

Club chairman, Maurice Costello was first to speak and he welcomed members of the Wrenn family; local and visiting supporters and guests: Sean Kelly, MEP; Brendan Griffin, TD., Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport; Tim Murphy, Kerry County Board chairman

He also praised the strong turnout and described how far the club has come.

Sean Kelly spoke of the ‘heart and soul’ of Tom Wrenn and recently deceased club stalwart Jimmy Roche whose strong spirits helped to create a football club that would be there for future generations.

Happiness Tinged with Sadness

Club secretary, Richard O’Donoghue talked about the day being one of happiness tinged with sadness. He praised the two men Cordal have lost in recent times in Tom Wrenn and Jimmy Roche.

Richard explained how both men helped to mould the club together and how they continue to spur us on.

He praised the quick response by newly appointed Minister of State, Brendan Griffin, TD upon receiving invitation to the event.

Richard also thanked Knocknagoshel GAA Club for obliging the host club by have their SFL game played in Cordal before the unveiling of the stand.

Pat Ahern spoke on behalf of Ahern’s Garage, Castleisland who kindly sponsored the plaque for the stand.

Face of Testing Business

Pat said that Tom was the face of their vehicle testing business and spoke fondly of Tom’s long career with Ahern’s Garage and how happy they were to be a part of this gesture in his memory.

Minister of State for Sports and Tourism, Brendan Griffin, TD praised the Cordal set up and compared it to his own club in Keel as a small club yet greatly punching above it’s weight.

He praised the event as a means of preserving the legacy of the two, late club giants of Tom Wrenn and Jimmy Roche.

Minister Griffin also noted that the event was the first official Kerry engagement he attended as a minister.

Big Part of Father’s Life

Brid Wrenn spoke on behalf of the Wrenn Family. She thanked the different speakers and Cordal GAA Club which had been such a big part of her father’s life.

She congratulated Canon O’Mahony who recently celebrated his diamond jubilee. She also spoke about how happy her father would have been to see Brosna man Tim Murphy appointed as county board chairman.

Tim Murphy then gave a fitting description of Tom Wrenn. He said if you were trying to describe how to be a great community person in a manual you’d describe Tom.

Genuinely Praising Tom

Canon O’Mahony praised Tom Wrenn who had been a very good friend to him as Cordal sacristan. He said how wonderful to it is to hear people genuinely praising Tom.

The stand was finally blessed by attending clerics and unveiled by Tim Murphy.

The Cordal GAA Club stand from henceforth is to be called the Tom Wrenn Memorial Stand in his honour.

It was fitting to see such a great crowd for the unveiling. We’d again like to thank everyone who attended, to those who spoke at the event and of course to Ahern’s Garage for sponsoring the plaque for the stand.

A crucial moment came in the tenth minute when Cordal goalie Sean Óg Ó Ciardubháin saved a near goal for Knocknagoshal.

Fantastic Season for Cordal U-12s

Working very hard for each other against a physically stronger team, they finished the first half in front.

Laune Rangers came back very strong in the second half. The cool head and athleticism of Oileán Walsh was the difference in the end. He rose high over the rest to spectacularly to fist a free kick into the net, this goal separated the teams at the end.

The game finished on a score-line of Cordal 3-9 to Laune Rangers 2-9. Their busy schedule continued playing St. Pats of Blennerville on Wednesday in Cordal.

Desmond succumbed to a 14 point home defeat at the hands of Rathmore at the weekend in Round 6 of the county league.

Rathmore got off to a great start in the second minute of the game when Desmonds conceded a own goal and it was going to be a hard evening for the home side.

Strong Breeze and 11 Points

Rathmore played the first half with a very strong breeze and this resulted in them scoring 11 points. Mark Reen contributed five of these with two from George O’Keeffe and three from Dean Fitzgerald with John Moynihan adding one.

Desmonds scored 1-3 in this half with Cian Hickey O’Connor getting their only goal from a great pass from Pa White and two points from Cian O’Connor and one from Tadhg Walsh.

However, there was little the home side could do and we saw the scoreboard read 1-3 to 1-11 to Rathmore at half time.

Four Unanswered Points

In the second half Rathmore opened the scoring with four unanswered points from play to now lead 1-14 to 1-3.

Then we saw Rathmore’s man of the match, John Moynihan scoring the first of his three goals from play in the fifth minute – and he followed it up with goals in the 10th and 21st minutes of the game.

At half time, Desmonds had introduced club captain Thomas Hickey to the game after a long layoff through injury.

Hickey’s presence made a massive difference as he laid off a great pass to Graham O’Connor to slot it pass the Rathmore keeper Shane Ryan.

A Goal and Point in Two Minutes

Thomas Hickey also scored a point and a goal in the next two minutes and Desmonds were now on 3-4 but Rathmore kept adding points from Mark Reen, Colm Kelly Dean Fitzgerald, Donnacha McCarthy and John Moynihan.

Desmonds scored only two more points from Hickey and Patrick Horan and we saw them finish the game on 3-7 to Rathmore’s 4-18.

Tá Siad ag Teacht

Desmonds will play at home on this Friday evening, June 30th when they host An Ghaeltacht in the county league at Moanmore at 7:30pm.

‘There’s a light beyond these woods, Mary Margaret.
Do you think that we will go there,
And see what makes it shine, Mary Margaret?

The lines of the hauntingly lovely song by Nancy Griffith occurred to me last week when talking to an American who had flown to Ireland and travelled to Castleisland to gaze on the new athletic track surface at An Riocht.

I thought of the lines – in reverse – I suppose. In that the light is here and people are coming to see what makes it shine.

List of Attractions

There is little doubt but that the laying of the new two-tone surface has put the athletics track right on top of the list of attractions in Castleisland at present.

That may not be a big list in our little market town culture and mindset but it certainly is a welcome re-addition.

In fact, its light went well beyond these woods as photographs of the near complete, photogenic surface began to appear on social media on the eve of last weekend’s Denny / Kerry Community Games Finals.

Shona Heaslip – An Ambassador

International athlete and An Ríocht AC member, Shona Heaslip was, phone in hand, filling an ambassadorial and patriotic role while taking part in the European Athletics Team Championships in the Lille Metropole Stadium in France at the weekend. And they have only a monotone, blue track there.

She was ‘showing-off’ the home track to her international team-mates and their reactions, apart from the oooohs, the aaaahs and the wows, were mainly like, ‘when can we run there’ and ‘I can’t wait to try it out’ and several other complimentary utterances.

Minister Fast out of Traps

The transformation couldn’t have but impressed Kerry’s newly appointed Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, TD as he, fast out of the traps, visited the games finals on Saturday in the company of his party colleague, Cllr. Bobby O’Connell.

Wonderful and all as it appeared and tidy and all as it happened, it was finished just on time for the games. The vagaries of South West of Ireland’s weather did nothing to advance the project.

In fact, the weather held up progress at every hand’s turn as the Denny/Kerry Community Games Finals were nearly in the tunnel and limbering up for their laps of honour.

Allotted Time

It relented on enough occasions for the job to go from line to tape in just under the allotted time.

The opening ceremony and lighting of the flame of the 2017 Kerry Community Games Track and Field Athletics Finals were performed at 10am on Saturday morning in a thick enough mist – but things got much better from there on.

Lap of the Track

International Meeting on Track ?

So, with all this near world wide focus on the light beyond all their woods, can we expect to see a high profile athletics meeting here in the not too distant future?
