Knocknagoshel natives, friends and Castleisland Desmonds GAA Club footballers, Leanne Mangan and Lorraine Scanlon are joint captains of the team this year.

They will lead their team onto Listry GAA Club pitch on Sunday at 12noon to do battle with an ‘old enemy’ – reigning title holders in the ladies of Southern Gaels.

There they will contest the County Ladies Senior Football Championship Final and for the Caroline Broderick Memorial Cup.

Pen to Paper

For the occasion that’s in it, Leanne put pen to paper to chart the careers of both of them from the time they were in the village school in The Mall and all the way to All-Ireland success with St. Joseph’s Secondary School and with Castleisland Desmonds. The highlight being when Lorraine captained the team to win the All-Ireland Intermediate Championship title in that unforgettable campaign of 2014.

Lorraine and Myself – By Leanne Mangan

“Lorraine and myself have the honour of being joint captains of Castleisland Desmonds this year. We have played together since we can remember with our former club Knocknagoshel – where we had great success under age winning county and Cumman na mBunscoil titles.

We continued our footballing campaign together in St. Josephs Secondary School where we were thrilled to win a Junior and Senior All-Ireland in the same year with huge praise to Con Healy and Billy Mangan.

Two Knocknagoshel Girls

It is a great privilege for two Knocknagoshel girls to captain such a fantastic club like Castleisland Desmonds on Sunday.

We are humbled to have great success so far by winning the Intermediate All-Ireland in 2014. There has been ferocious work put into the club this year behind the scenes and we are very thankful for all the effort put in.

We are delighted to see that the club is still going strong with a lot of success at underage this year and hopefully on Sunday we can build on the success we have had in the past.

Donal and Caroline – Club Stalwarts

It is also worth noting that former club chairman, Donal Curtin, RIP was also from Knocknagoshel and as county chairman he introduced the Caroline Broderick Memorial Cup to honour a former club stalwart and it is this cup we are endeavouring to win.

Donal’s daughter Mariah has been making the round journey from Limerick to attend training with the club and will play on Sunday.

This shows the commitment that she and all the girls have shown to get us to this stage.

We hope there will be plenty of support on the day as these girls have trained hard to do us proud !

The team is made up of: Tara Murphy, Tina Mangan, Aisling Leonard, Mariah Curtin, Jane Lynch,

Labhaoise Walmsley, Gemma Kearney, Lorraine Scanlon, joint captain; Eilís Lynch, Andrea Murphy, Cáit Lynch, Kayla Ó’Connor, Rachael Cronin, Mellisa Holland, Leanne Mangan, joint captain; Fiona Griffin, Orla White, Sabhdh Prendiville, Stef Murphy, Abbie Brosnan, Emma Regan, Áine Sheehan, Ruth Cahill, Lilly Cox and Saoirse Murphy.

Good luck to the Castleisland Desmonds Ladies and their mentors and committee member in Listry tomorrow.

Painful, Childhood Memories from Kerry V Galway Games

Even though I have two beautiful little Galwegians for grandchildren I can still feel the pain the Westerners inflicted on Kerry in the early to mid 1960s.

On that basis alone, without even thinking of the deeper notion of heritage and whatever it is that makes my heart pound in my chest when I see our county’s boys running onto the field, I’m a Kerry man.

In Defiance of Gravity

It’s the kind of thing which drives men of advancing years to pull ladders from sheds and, in defiance of gravity and touches of lumbago and vertigo, climb onto roofs of houses and plant flags on chimneys.

Pack of Photographers

I had to move away from the midst of a pack of photographers one evening in Tralee as the Kerry minors played Clare in the semi-final of the Munster Championship.

Kerry's Kieran Brennan makes a spectacular leap to fetch this midfield ball ahead of Clare's, Diarmuid Cusack during Wednesday evening's Munster Minor football Semi-Final at Austin Stack Park. ©Photograph: John Reidy 29/6/2005

Kieran Brennan was on the team and he was doing great gaisce around midfield.

He capped it all by kicking one of the finest points you’d wish to see into the town goal.

I immediately felt the lump grab my throat and the ducts behind my eyes losing their battle against a flood and I had to escape for shame’s sake.

I suppose we should remember that it takes the whole county to form and make footballers and it takes them to bring back the prize to close the circle.

Supplying Transport

Ahern’s and Divane’s here in Castleisland have been supplying transport to county footballers and managers respectively for years now and that’s another aspect of the ring of support that’s rightly there for them.

Handed Over the Keys

Only a few weeks ago, Kerry manager, Eamonn Fitzmaurice picked up his 172 VW Tiguan as Divane’s sales team members, Paul Langston and Brendan O’Sullivan handed over the keys.

Kerry footballer, Brendan O’Sullivan has been on the Divanes Castleisland team since the beginning of the year.

Loving Connections with Galway

In spite of my loving connections with and genuine fondness for Galway, I’ve been thrown into the depths of despair by its great footballers too often in my formative years for the scars to ever heal or the memories to fade.

Come on The Kingdom. Go n-éirí an bóthar libh !

Today’s Kerry Team: Brian Kelly, Fionn Fitzgerald, Mark Griffin, Shane Enright, Peter Crowley, Tadhg Morley, Paul Murphy, David Moran, Jack Barry, Michael Geaney, Johnny Buckley, captain; Donnchadh Walsh, Paul Geaney, Kieran Donaghy and James O’Donoghue.

Back to School Costs Survey – Parents to Shoulder Another Burden

As children enjoy their freedom from school, parents are already preparing to shoulder the burden of the back to school spend which has now averaged €1,209 per child.

That’s according to the Irish League of Credit Unions latest research of its annual Back to School Costs Survey.

The nationwide survey again shows clearly that school related costs continue to be a financial burden for a majority as high as 72% of parents with 29% saying they will get into debt because of it.

Get Into Debt

One in four say they will be forced to deny their children certain Back to School basics this year because they cannot afford them, while a significant 29% say they will get into debt over the back to school spend.

Helen Courtney-Power Chairperson, Chapter 23 – Kerry and West Limerick Credit Unions Marketing Group feels it is somewhat encouraging to see that more parents than ever are funding the back to school spend through their monthly income, with a fall in the numbers getting into debt.

“However it’s clear that the back to school spend is still so much of a financial burden on parents that they are forced to deny their children some basic items, as well as sacrificing spending on family holidays and even food,” she said.

Talk to Credit Union

“While the rise in numbers using moneylenders was marginal, we would find any increase like this concerning and would really encourage parents to instead talk to their local credit union, where interest rates are fair and capped by law.

“Credit Unions have always been on hand to provide financial assistance to parents as they try to manage these annual costs and ease the financial burden.

“We encourage parents who know they will need to borrow, to talk to their local credit union before considering a credit card or a moneylender.

“Our interest rates are lower and more affordable. We also ensure that the loan terms are structured in a way to suit every individual situation best,” said Ms. Courtney-Power.

Key Survey Findings

Some of the key survey findings published during the week which will cause dread in many households include:

*One in four parents will have to deny their children some basic school items this year as they continue to struggle to fund the back to school spend.

*The average return to school spend continues to increase and has now reached €1,209 per child – up from €1,185 last year – a 2% rise.

*More than a quarter say the costs will negatively impact household bills.

*Almost three quarters of parents continue to see the back to school spend as a financial burden, despite a 2% drop in the numbers getting into debt.

*A substantial two thirds say they will buy foreign goods over Irish produced goods if it means cutting costs.

*Tesco has overtaken Dunnes Stores as the preferred shop for back to school supplies and uniforms.

Cllr. Bobby O’Connell has welcomed the allocation of €8,000 for the development of the Castleisland River Walk under Minister Michael Ring’s Rural Recreation Scheme. The grant is in line with the National Countryside Recreation Strategy which was developed by the National Countryside Recreation Strategy by Comhairle Na Tuaithe.

Rural Recreation

This work of Rural Recreation is to provide for actions to develop countryside recreation in line with the objectives of the National Countryside Recreation Strategy as developed by Comhairle Na Tuaithe – The Countryside Council.

Maintenance Based Scheme

It also encompasses the implementation of the Walks Scheme which is a maintenance based scheme providing modest payments to landowners who maintain sections of National Way Marked Ways and priority walks that traverse their lands.

The scheme was announced jointly last April by Minister for Arts, Heritage, Regional, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs, Heather Humphreys TD and the Minister of State for Regional Economic Development, Michael Ring, TD.

They announced €20 million in funding for rural towns and villages as part of the Action Plan for Rural Development.

Town and Village Renewal

Up to 300 towns and villages will benefit from funding under the 2017 Town and Village Renewal Scheme, which will be made available through Local Authorities over the next year in a bid to support rural regeneration.

The scheme is specifically targeted at rural towns and villages with populations of less than 10,000. Applications from towns can range from €20,000 to a maximum of €100,000.

Funding of up to €200,000 will also be considered for a limited number of projects which can deliver exceptionally strong economic benefit to a town and its outlying areas.

The River Walk in Castleisland is, probably, one of the most used public facilities in the area. It is an amenity which is open to all and all ages.

Great Pollinators of Our Planet

Recent regulations where river bank trimming is being prohibited has really enhanced the look of the river along the walk.

Wildlife of all kinds now have more cover and the abundance of wild flowers are playing host to the great pollinators of our planet.

In welcoming the grant, Cllr. O’Connell said that he’s delighted at the news.

“It is clear that the River Walk has become so much part of Castleisland now and its benefit to the locality is beyond question. The Tidy Towns group and their workers really do a great job in looking after it and it’s only right that this is recognised in some way,” said Cllr. O’Connell.

Sandra Keane Blitz at John Mitchel’s

Our U-13 girls team participated in the well organised Sandra Keane Blitz held in John Mitchels on Saturday last.

Our first game saw us take on Beaufort where the opposition started the better and led by five points at the break.

Early in the second half we were on level terms with two goals.Unfortunately for us Beaufort struck for a brace of goals themselves midway through the half which ensured victory for them.

Town Team Had Wind Advantage

Our second game saw us pitted against Kerins O Rahillys where the town team with wind advantage in the first half led at half time on a 1-2 to 0-0 scoreline. Our girls slotted four points in the second half but couldn’t find the extra scores to draw or win.

We then faced Firies in the plate semi final where we were sluggish in the opening half which saw us three points down at the break.

Firies Finished Stronger

However an improvement in our play saw us draw level midway through the half. Firies finished the stronger and added three points before the final whistle to end our interest in the competition. Well done to all our girls who did their best for the club on the day.

Third level college students are now being invited to apply for a €1,500 windfall to help finance their studies.

Tralee Credit Union’s Education and Dan Kellegher Memorial Awards are open to undergraduates in a full time course of at least two years duration. The awards are open to post-graduates in a full or part-time course of at least one year’s duration.

Seven Lucky Members

In total, the Tralee Credit Union give-away is worth €10,500 to seven lucky members who each receive €1,500 towards their chosen course of study.

Open to all Tralee Credit Union members in college, application can be made for the awards online at the website address below.

If you are yet not a member and are eligible to join Tralee Credit Union, you can join and enter before Saturday, September 30th.

Suzanne Ennis, Marketing and Development Manager, Tralee Credit Union said that it’s an expensive time of year with a huge financial burden placed on students and their families.

“While our education awards don’t solve the problem they do go a long way towards easing the financial pressure.

Quick Online Application

“We offer an easy and quick online application process on our website. All you have to do is visit our website, fill in your details and you could be one of seven lucky members randomly selected to win.

“For students who need a loan we have a very low Student Loan Rate available to both students and their parents. We also have a low rate Saver’s Loan for parents who have saved up for college to give them a ‘spend it or save it’ option on loans of €5,000 or more.

“Most people find it easier to repay a loan than it is to save so they borrow on the strength of their savings.

Pay Without Penalty

“With our saver’s loan they still have their savings at the end of the loan plus they have the flexibility of knowing that they can repay their loan anytime without penalty and they have peace of mind of free life cover on both their loans and their savings with our Loan Protection and Life Savings Insurance,” said Suzanne.

Cordal/Scart v Gneeveguilla. East Kerry Minor League

Cordal/Scart Minors were back on the football scene on Thursday evening after a good few weeks break to take part in this year’s East Kerry Minor League, which they won last year.

The first round was against Gneeveguilla who were hardy opponents and Cordal/Scart were left two points behind at the final whistle. Cordal/Scart scored 1-12 to Gneeveguilla’s 1-14.

Started Strong

The first half started strong for Gneeveguilla their number thirteen, Evan Cronin kicked over two consecutive points in the opening minutes.

Cordal/Scart’s first quarter was also strong. They started with a point scored in the fourth minute, kicked over by Joseph Sheehy. Sean Walsh scored Cordal/Scart’s additional three points of the quarter.

The second quarter proved weaker for Cordal/Scart with only two points scored and they had to replace a player after a black card.

Gneeveguilla clocked up four points, building their lead – which should have been stronger if not for so many wides.

Not Over Yet

Sean Walsh scored the last point of the first half. Cordal/Scart were a goal down at 0-6 to Gneeveguilla’s 0-9 but the game was certainly not over yet.

The second half kicked off with a Cordal/Scart point. Gneeveguilla attacked for the rest of the third quarter and scored two points.

They also kicked in a goal, extending their lead thanks to Jack Brosnan.

The final fifteen minutes were Cordal/Scart’s best display of football. Sean Walsh began the break down of Gneeveguilla’s lead with two points. Kieran Enright had the Gneeveguilla boys sweating after knocking over a point and scoring a late goal.

One Last Push

With a goal needed to steal the win Cordal/Scart made one last push but their efforts were in vain with time up, the ref blew the whistle.

The final scores left Cordal/Scart two points shy of equalizing at 1-12 to Gneeveguilla’s 1-14.

Hard luck lads after a close finish.

The Cordal/Scart boys were put through their paces for their first East Kerry Minor League game. The game saw some good displays of football by Jack Flynn who has been absent from some of the season’s earlier games.

Showed Their Potential

D.J Fealey had a good game after rejoining the minor team ranks. Sean Walsh had a long list of scores, kicking over ten points.

The U-16 players who played as part of the minor panel showed their potential for minor level. Giles O’Connor, Joseph Sheehy and Conor Kerin showing well.

The Cordal/Scart Team: 1. Cathal O’Donoghue; 2. Denis O’Mahony; 3. Pádraig Brosnan; 4. Giles O’Connor; 5. Dylan O’Donoghue; 6. Pádraig O’Connor; 7. Jason Browne; 8. Kieran Enright;

9. David Riordan; 10. Donnacha Daly; 11. Mark O’Donoghue; 12. Jack Flynn; 13. Joseph Sheehy; 14. Sean Walsh; 15. D.J Fealey; Subs: Conor Kerin for David Riordan, Nathan O’Rourke.

Cordal/Scart v Beaufort – East Kerry Minor League Round 2

Hard luck to Cordal/Scart who were well beaten with 2-5 to Gneeveguilla’s 1-15. The game was played in Scart on Monday.

Dan Paddy Andy Festival Celebrates 20 Years

A Cupán Tae and a slice of Dan’s special 20th anniversary cake!  That’s what you can expect when you attend the opening event of this year’s Dan Paddy Andy Festival – the Irish Rambling House Show.

The Festival, the 20th, is on over the August Bank Holiday Weekend and Thursday, August 3rd, is opening night with the first ever performance at the Festival by the Irish Rambling House – the show that has been traveling to England to entertain the exiles with music, song, dance , storytelling … and the craic, for many years.

If laughter is the best medicine then the Irish Rambling House Show is the prescription. After the show there will be a roving microphone for a song or a story from the audience.

It promises to be a real Irish Rambling House night and would be lovely for visiting exiles in particular.  This year’s Festival, over the August Bank Holiday Weekend, has all the usual events but the big news is that Declan Nerney and his mighty band is back in the Marquee on Sunday night, August 6.

The event has been extended to five days with some new events such as Ger’s Mobile Animal Farm and for the first time in that part of Kerry there will be a Sheepdog Trial demo thanks to Brendan Ferris from Killorglin. Both children and adults will enjoy.  And for the young folk Sylvano is back – as if by magic!  You can dance yourself silly in the Marquee to some great bands.  There is a Ceilí with Tim Joe and Anne O’Riordan on the Friday night, a dog show on Saturday and for those left standing after all that there is a Bog Walk on Bank Holiday Monday morning at 11am with a Falconry display, music and tea in the Bog.  The other new event is the 5/10K Run/Walk with all proceeds to the Kerry/Cork Cancer Link Bus.  This is a worthy cause and a lovely route. For information on this or any of the Festival events the number is 087 285 3570 or the Dan Paddy Andy Facebook Page

You know the way you’re drawn into a painting and have a look around and lose yourself in your imagined ambiance.

The late Mike Kenny (1956-2011) and myself were in his painting of The Shoemaker one night years ago. I was there in the role of admirer – as I always thought it was one of his finest, surviving pieces of brush-work.

He was there as a harsh, self critic. He thought he should have ‘thrown’ a handful of tacks on the bench around the base of the last and a couple trailing out beyond the sole of the shoe.

It was a Sunday Anyway

I told him I knew the shoemaker in whose memory the bar was named and that he was a tidy man and, by the looks of it, the shoe was finished and he would have cleaned the bench and it was probably a Sunday anyway.

We snapped out of it, stepped back out and called for our first couple of pints.

That painting hung on the chimney breast of The Shoemaker’s Inn for more than a decade from the early 1980s.

If its disappearance was a minor mystery then, its reappearance on a recent June night was major. It was the kind of night that the man himself would have celebrated with all sails aloft.

Right Man – Right Place

It was a case of the right man in the right place. I got a call from Pat Jameson late one night and he claimed that the original ‘Kenny painting’ had been rediscovered in a store room at the bar.

Stranger still, it had been left outside the rear door of the bar some time earlier. As it was yet another piece of his work which went unsigned, it wasn’t recognised for what it was.

It took Pat Jameson to pop up and say that’s Mike Kenny’s painting and it belongs on the wall of the bar.

Co-incidental that.

Mike Kenny always credited Pat’s father, Josie Jameson as one of the few people who saw and encouraged him, as a child, along the road he followed for the rest of his life.

There on the Day

Pat Jameson was there on the day that Mike made the presentation of the painting to Pats and Linda Broderick who ran the bar at the time.

It was Mike’s favourite bar at the time under Pats and Linda and it was there he and Mary Jones held the first official meeting of the Patrick O’Keeffe Traditional Music Festival in the autumn of 1993.

Now, on Friday, August 11th there will be a Mike Kenny Remembrance Weekend in his memory and various events will be held in a handful of pubs.

On that evening in the Shoemaker’s Bar, Nuala and Steve Curtin are facilitating an event from 9pm. Matt Cranitch will re-unveil the painting and he will be joined by Jackie Daly and musicians from far and wide in a tune in memory of Mr. Kenny and a session in the front bar immediately afterwards.

Full credit to the skills of local carpenter, Martin Nolan who reunited the painting with its frame and hung it in the bar.

Musicians Involved

Mick Culloty, PJ Teahan, Paul de Grae, Mary Lawless, Con Moynihan and Denis O’Connor and Matt will be bringing Japanese guest musicians to the session.

Anyone who knew the late Mr. Kenny is invited to attend. There will also be a weekend launch and a session at the nearby Browne’s Bar.

It was on the Friday evening of August 12th. 2011 that Mike died in Kerry General Hospital.

Full Programme of Events

There is also a full programme of events on over the weekend including the awarding of the Mike Kenny Memorial Cup to a young musician and a busking competition on the street on Saturday.

See The Maine Valley Post’s recent preview of other events over the weekend and contact details through the link here: http://www.mainevalleypost.com/2017/07/10/mike-kenny-remembrance-weekend-august-11th-and-12th

As far as connections to place are concerned, Knocknagoshel has as much claim to J.J. Hanrahan’s increasing fame as Northampton or Currow or Thomond Park.

On this Saturday, August 5th. JJ will do the honours when he will cut the ceremonial ribbon for Kieran McAuliffe as he officially opens his village based XL Store with a raft of entertainment and give-aways from 11am to 2pm.

Long Held Ambition

While he opened the store on Monday morning, April 3rd and realised a long held ambition and dream in the process, it’s only now he’s got a chance to do so officially.

Kieran had traded from a rented premises in The Village Shop for the past couple of years but after purchasing a house in the village he realised there was space to convert his shed into a new, modern premises.

Having served a decade long apprenticeship in some of the leading supermarkets in Tralee and Listowel, Kieran knows his business from the ground up.

The conversion from the shed to the shop took just over two months.

An Intense Process

“It was an intense process with Lee Roche Construction and his team working hard to meet the deadline. I’m delighted at how the business is going here and I’m listening and responding to the needs and requests of my customers. I’m looking forward to seeing them all on Saturday,” said Kieran.

Kieran’s XL Store trades as part of the franchise which is operated by the BWG group. They also own the Spar, Mace and Londis.

A lot of the goods he stocks are provided by local suppliers and he cites the examples of: bread, milk and vegetables. You can pick up your daily and Sunday newspapers, sit down and have coffee or tea or take it and go. Kieran’s XL Store is open daily from 8-30am to 9pm.

The Last Time I Met Anthony on The Street

The last time I met Anthony Cronin on the street was on a fine evening in April.

He was standing at Dr. Daly’s door on Lower Main Street and just across the street from his Latin Quarter home. We chatted briefly about his state of health at the time and more so about the weather of the day.

We parted, and as I walked away he said ‘Goodbye John’ and it struck me speechless. I looked back at him and he nodded. A picture paints a thousand words.

And though I saw him after that at home and in hospital – it’s those knowing words that are now most likely to stay with me.

You Must Know Your People

As he would say himself ‘You must know your people’ and that kind of sign off wasn’t Anthony’s style.

After a long and spirited battle Anthony Cronin died on Thursday. I should have written this yesterday but I wasn’t able.

Anthony was very good to me a long time ago. I fell off my bike on the freezingly cold winters morning over 50 years ago. I got a right bang off the icy Tralee Road and I felt dizzy and sick.

Love of his Life

I made it as far as Davy Griffin’s Corner and Anthony spotted my predicament. He took my bike and straightened whatever I had bent on it and took me into the house to his mother.

She gave me tea and made sure I was alright before I left.

Before Anthonty met the love of his life, Teresa Davern in the late 1990s, there was Julie – and they were inseparable. She would accompany him wherever he went.

That came to an abrupt end one night when she soiled the carpet in Brennan’s Bar and forced the owners to tile the floor of the bar.

Julie was something else. Julie was a Beagle.

First Woman to Know

I’m fairly sure that Sheila Prendiville was one of the first women in Castleisland to know that Anthony and Terese were getting married.

One winter’s afternoon I was one my way into Sheila’s and Anthony was on his way out. I went in and called for a pint and Sheila put her elbows on the counter and said, “Do you know what he’s after telling me ? – he’s getting married – could you believe him,” she asked.

Believe him we did as they got married in November 1999.

An Ríocht AC

A noted athlete in his youth, Anthony Cronin retained an interest in the sport throughout his life and with the Walsh brothers, Gerard and Joe and Denny McSweeney and Denis Twomey and Denis Brosnan and others, he was in the thick of the setting up of An Ríocht Athletic Club.

Funny, with a razor sharp wit, he was an absolute authority on townlands and boundary streams and ditches. And I can’t ever remember him being wrong in any such discussion.

Anthony went on a campaign of over a couple of years to get water back and flowing from The Fountain and the clock working on the nearby Market House.

He enlisted the help of Cllr. Danny Healy Rae and they managed to pipe and tap the water. It wasn’t from the original source but Anthony was more that happy to compromise.

On the day he drank his first glass of water from the newly flowing fountain I congratulated him on the achievement and asked him what’s next on his list. “Give me time,” he said – with a backward glance at the stalled clock on top of The Market House.

There will be a huge turnout at his removal this evening and burial tomorrow. I hope someone will bring a dog or two as they were so much part of his deeply colourful life.

May God be good to him. And I feel He will once He gets to know him.

Michael Healy Rae, TD – ’33% tax on home sales is ‘insane and kite flying.’
©Photograph: John Reidy.

“At this time of year in particularly it is a well known fact that the department of finance are inclined to fly a number of different kites,” said Deputy Michael Healy Rae.

“The kite-flying is for testing the public mood pre-budget by leaking or releasing details of ideas that they may have for the budget.

Make People Pay
“The suggestion to make people pay 33% tax on the sale of their own home is completely insane and it is so because of the following reasons.

“Firstly, these people if they bought their family home they paid stamp duty on it and paid a mortgage all their lives to pay it off.

“Then perhaps they want to down size and release that home to other young couples who really need it.

A Third Back In Tax

“Now the suggestion is that they would have to give a third of it back in tax to the department of finance.
“To even consider such a ridiculous, mean and stupid suggestion would be outrageous,” said an angry Deputy Healy Rae.

“This kite won’t fly as it is totally unacceptable to the majority of politicians and, most importantly of all, to the general public,” he concluded.

Castleisland native, Liz Shanahan is this year's Irish Person of the Year of the Kerry Association in London.

Castleisland native, Liz Shanahan is this year’s Irish Person of the Year of the Kerry Association in London.

A Castleisland woman who advises some of the world’s leading health organisations has been chosen as the 2017 Person of the Year by the Kerry Association London.

Report: The Irish Post Newspaper

Liz Shanahan – like so many other Irish emigrants – arrived in Britain in the mid-eighties on the Slattery’s Bus.

The Castleisland native, who lives in London with her husband Tim Lacey who hails from Tralee, is a member of the well-known Shanahan Chemist family and spends time in her home near Killorglin.

Ms Shanahan was the first woman and first Kerry Global Chair of the Irish International Business Network (IIBN) – a leading Irish business diaspora network abroad.

In 2016, recognising the importance to Ireland and business in Britain, she co-chaired Ireland4Europe, to galvanise the Irish vote around Britain’s EU membership referendum.

Kerry Focused Business

She has also been pivotal in initiating a number of Kerry-focused business forums in London and Kerry in the last few years.

Recognised as a leader of the Irish business community abroad, Ms Shanahan has been hugely successful both in business and in building networks between people and businesses with Irish, especially Kerry, connections.

She founded her first company, Santé Communications in 1994.

It became one of the world’s leading healthcare consultancies, advising leading pharmaceutical companies on corporate, financial, brand, medical and internal communications.

Her Irish graduate programme has resulted in Santé Alumni holding senior positions in international organisations around the globe.

A Senior Consultant

Following the sale of Santé to the NYSE listed FTI Consulting, Liz became Global Head of Healthcare & Lifesciences.

She is now a senior consultant to pharmaceutical and healthcare companies, an angel investor and speaks regularly on both topics, as well as the implications of Brexit, including to Radio Kerry on a regular basis.

Ms Shanahan is a member of the Global Irish Economic Forum, The British Council Provocation Group and a non-executive director of a UK hospital, Chelsea and Westminster NHS Trust.

“I’m incredibly proud of being from Kerry and when Denis Nolan rang me to tell me I’d been chosen as Kerry Person of the Year, I was humbled and honoured,” Ms Shanahan said.

Proud Kerry People

“One of the first events I ever attended when I arrived in London was the Kerry Association Annual Dinner with my husband, his aunt and uncle, Dorothy and James O’Shea, both also proud Kerry people.

“It’s a wonderful award and I’m genuinely delighted, as are my proud family in Castleisland and my many in-laws and Kerry friends.

“Kerry is a county that punches well above its weight in the business world,” she added.

“I come from generations of Kerry business people; my grandfather, father and brother all established their own pharmacy businesses, my aunt, Margaret Geaney established Crag Caves, so being in business is in the blood.”

Kerry’s Business Spirit

She added: “More Kerry entrepreneurs are shortlisted for the EY Entrepreneur of the Year award than any other county, a testament to Kerry’s business spirit, and evidenced by organisations like Kerry Group, DairyMaster and Fexco.

“As John B said, being a Kerry person, in my opinion, is the greatest gift that God can bestow on any person.”

Kerry Association London secretary Tara Cronin added: “It is always a difficult task selecting our Kerry Person of the Year and we had so many worthy nominations.

“Liz will be a fantastic ambassador the Kerry Association London and we are looking forward to working with her through the year. “

Ms Shanahan will be presented with her award at the KAL’s annual dinner and dance in the famous Crown Hotel in Cricklewood in October.
